Pentagon Allocates Another USD 2 Billion to Help Ukraine

TLDR: Pentagon Allocates Another USD 2 Billion to Help Ukraine

  • Pentagon found errors in calculations, allowing for additional USD 2 billion in weapons to be sent to Ukraine
  • Previous accounting error in 2023 led to additional deliveries worth USD 6.2 billion

The Pentagon has found additional errors in its calculations of ammunition, missiles, and other equipment sent to Ukraine, which allows for the sending of additional weapons worth USD 2 billion. This is stated in the US government’s report of 25 July, as reported by Reuters. The US Department of Defence faced problems in accurately assessing defence items sent to Ukraine due to unclear accounting definitions. The Pentagon employees used replacement cost to calculate military aid, rather than the cost of weapons at the time of purchase and depreciation.

In 2023, a similar situation arose when the Pentagon reported an accounting error that had overstated the cost of weapons sent to Kyiv in 2022-2023, leading to additional deliveries worth USD 6.2 billion. In April of this year, the US House of Representatives passed a national security bill providing USD 95 billion in military aid to Ukraine, Israel, and other US allies, with about USD 61 billion allocated for Ukraine.
